The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters, written from right to left. Learning to recognise each letter and its name is the first step towards reading the Quran.

Tip for parents: point to a letter and say its name together. Arabic is read right to left, so the first letter, Alif (ا), is at the top right. Heavy letters such as ص ض ط ظ ق are pronounced from deeper in the mouth; a qualified teacher can model the correct sounds.
